Maggi Experiment

Instant noodle is a great invention and it has become our important food nowadays. 3 minutes of cooking, adding artificial seasoning, done. It is easy to serve, and it saves a lot of time. When we are in a rush or feel like having a light meal, we will cook instant noodles.

There are two popular brands of instant noodles in Malaysia, everyone knows them – Cintan and Maggi. They have many flavours and products that make you believe that instant noodles are delicious and convenient. They even have noodles packed along with plastic bowls, all you have to do is add hot water and wait 3 minutes, they have prepare everything for you.

In this modern era that full of influenza and affluenza, we have become more health-conscious. It is known that Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) in the artificial seasoning is bad for our health, so we put less seasoning or none while we cook, and we do not boil the seasoning. Yes this is right, but who knows that the noodle itself is also bad for our health?

There are rumours of the coating of wax to the noodles spreading around, but people do not seem to concern about it. Some people argue that the coating layer is actually potato starch but in fact, there is no disclaimer from any health organization that the noodles are safe and healthy.

With this lousy but simple experiment, we hope to find out whether there is any coating on the noodles. The materials used are CINTAN instant noodle and synthetic vinegar i.e. acetic acid.

The noodle was smashed into pieces and soaked in hot boiling water and acetic acid separately for 30 minutes. After that, the noodle was removed and the solutions were left to cool to atmosphere temperature. Meanwhile, the procedure was repeated and the solutions were cooled to 0ºC. A plate of cooking oil with vinegar was prepared to compare the results.

So this is the results. The first picture is the cooking oil layer in vinegar.

This is the picture of a layer in water at room temperature, and the following picture shows the layer in water left in atmosphere overnight.

The picture below shows the layer in vinegar and in water at 0ºC.

After soaking the noodle, a layer appears above the water or vinegar. It is suspected as a layer of oil at the beginning, but unlike the cooking oil layer, the layer seems saturated. It did not smelled bad after being left in atmosphere overnight. Therefore it is not potato starch.

The question is, is that layer really wax or oil? To me it does not feel like oil but wax of candles, not smooth and does not dissolve into anything. Even if it is oil, it is still unhealthy to us because it is saturated oil that will definitely turn into fat in our body.

So people, PLEASE STOP EATING INSTANT NOODLE NOW! Eating too much instant noodle is bad for your health, because you are eating wax and chemicals! If you insist, you should at least soak the noodle and filter the wax once or twice before you make the seasoning soup. Please share this piece of information to everyone!

This article was taken from a famous amateur website http://pizxebe.webs.com/maggi.html (lol!) and it was very interesting.

The author did a simple experiment on instant noodles to see whether instant noodles are coated with wax or something hazardous to our health. He found out that there was something coating the noodles. Only a some amount of it was washed and removed during cooking. The removed layer of coating solidified after cooled and it did not turn bad after being left overnight.

So even if the coating is not wax, it is true that it will not give us any health benefits. Most probably that is the reason of obesity and weight gaining. No matter how you cook, you will not be able to remove the coating totally.

The best way is eat less, or stop eating instant noodles.
