We love red wines. Some researches shows that drinking 2-3 cups of red wine per day is good for health. Moreover, red wine is a good topic and serving in dinners and gatherings. And yes, we don’t want to buy a bad red wine!
For beginners like me, this piece of information is useful.
- Take a look at the alcohol content in the label. A good red wine should be at least 13%. If lower than 13%, it tastes like a grape juice.
- Read the label carefully. Vin De Pays means Country Wine or Table Wine in French. It is a lower class wine compared to Appellation d’origine contrôlée. You will notice the price difference between 2 class of wine, and you can judge a wine easily from this.
- Take the bottle of wine and have a look at the bottom. See the punt (or holes, whatever you call it)? The punt has many functions, and one of it is to hold the sediment deposits at the bottom of the bottle. You may notice sometimes the last cup of wine is bitter than the first cup. That is the sediment. It is good component in red wine and affects the taste very much. But if it does not deposit at the bottom of bottle, the wine will taste bitter. Therefore, the bigger the punt is, the better wine it is.
- Now pour the red wine out, half only please. Time to drink! No no no…wait a second! Stir the glass a while. Notice the liquid flow on the glass. A good red wine is fermented from high quality grape vines which comes from countries with dry climate, such as Italy, Australia, California etc. French wine depends on the climate change. If there is more rain throughout the year, the wine produced will be more diluted. Thus the more concentrated the red wine is, the better taste it has. For beginners, it is always an easier choice to choose red wines other than French wine unless you are professional and knowledgeable.
Now you know how to choose a good wine. Enjoy!
